TE 802: Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice I
Ann Castle
This course was one of the four I took during my year-long teaching internship through MSU. This course was centered around writing instruction in elementary school. During this course, I researched various pedagogy for writing instruction and evaluated different practices. I also became familiar with Michigan Common Core State Standards. As our big assignment, I was asked to plan a 10-lesson writing sequence. That assignment allowed me to practice important skills such as planning, utilizing curriculum, teaching, and reflecting.
TE 803: Professional Roles and Teaching Practice II
Maggie Demarse
This course was also a part of my year-long teaching internship. This course was centered around becoming a conscious educator. We focused on investigating social studies practices in the classroom but the course was much more than that. We investigated diversity in the classroom and how to teach about difficult subject matter respectfully. We were also able to research a special services qualifier in depth. This project allowed me to understand the legal aspects of special education and how I can support all students with exceptionalities.
TE 804: Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice II
Martha Beitner-Miller
This was the last course I took during my year-long teaching internship that transferred into my MAED program. TE 804 was our science content course. We spent a lot of time dissecting and understanding the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These standards are the new norm for rich science instruction but they can be hard to understand. It was very beneficial to look at them in depth and envision what hands on science would look like. I then got to design a 3-lesson science sequence and reflect upon student work.
ED 800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Kristy Cooper Stein
This course was a deep dive into educational research. There were five modules in which we learned about a different form of educational research. In each module we were required to watch online lectures, read a novel based in that research practice, take a quiz and write an essay about the book. This was one of the first classes I took as a part of the MAED program. Along with valuable knowledge about research practices, I learned time management skills and became better at reading research texts.
TE 838: Children's Literature in Film
Laura Apol
This course was all about children’s literature and how it is interpreted through film. Each week we focused on a different piece of literature. We would read the book, watch the film interpretation and then compare them in depth. It was very interesting to discuss how different mediums use different tools to get their themes across. Although I was already familiar with story elements, I got to learn all about film elements which was very interesting and something I had never done before.
CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Technology
Mary Wever
This course was centered in the 21st century. It discussed how technology can be a vital tool in the modern classroom for both teachers and students. Throughout the course, we researched new ways of teaching such as 21st century learning and TPACK (technology, pedagogy and content knowledge). As I acquired a new understanding of these skills, I recorded my learning in a course blog. Creating this blog helped me practice skills such as web design, organization, and creative writing.
KIN 829: Safety and Inquiry Control
Jessica Wallace
During this course, I learned all about injury prevention and treatment in sports. I was asked to explore different injuries within sports and the factors that can cause them. I was asked to make an emergency action plan in order to better understand everything that goes into injury prevention. I also researched a specific injury in depth to become familiar with how injuries can happen in sports. Understanding injury causes and treatments is crucial for injury prevention which is a very important part of a coach’s job.
KIN 857: Promoting Positive Youth Development Through Sport
Jennifer Roth
This course was one that I enjoyed very much. As a part of my sport coaching and leadership concentration this course taught me all about positive youth development in sports. I read research articles and became familiar with the ways coaches can promote positive youth development through sports. I was also able to formulate my coaching philosophy and develop my coaching identity.
KIN 868: Skill Development in Athletes
Andy Driska
Throughout my time in the MAED program I have learned all about how to be a thoughtful educator. In this course, I finally became a thoughtful coach as well. This course taught me so many new valuable pieces of information. I learned all about skill acquisition frameworks, practice organization, motor learning principles and coaching pedagogy. Through the assignments I was able to design drills and thoughtfully develop a skill with a real athlete.
ED 870: Capstone Portfolio
Matthew Koehler and Megan Harris
This course gave me the opportunity to reflect on my learning throughout the MAED program. I wrote goal statements, essays, reflections, and got to design this online portfolio. I am very thankful for this course because it gave me time to stop and be proud of the work I did while pursuing my Master’s degree. Beyond reflective practices, I was able to improve my organization skills, design skills, and peer communication.
