Introduction
Despite the fact that I only recently got into photography, I find great joy in taking photos. It started with a cheap digital camera from Amazon, to a DSLR Canon Eos Rebel T5. To be honest, I still don't really know the importance of brands or names of cameras, I will gladly take what I can get :)
Being on the yearbook comes with being surrounded by many talented photographers. However, I don't take this as a way to downgrade my own photography skills or "lack of skills" per se, but I view it as a learning experience. My fellow students and faculty on the yearbook team have taught me different strategies for taking photos in a dark gym or how I shouldn't have the ISO too high because otherwise, my photos will turn out grainy. With this mindset, I know that I can grow as a photographer.
Club Photo Day
Ah, Club Photo Day! The one day that we get to yell at people and tell them what to do! My favorite!
But in all seriousness, club photo day is a rigorous process.
Mr. Baron sends out a Schoology update reminding staff when club photo day will occur and how to sign up.
2. Staff members sign up on a shared spreadsheet and plan to come during certain blocks to assist the yearbook team.
3. The day of, Regulus staff arrives to the gym early in the morning to begin setting up for the day.
4. As clubs start rolling in, we begin to photograph each club and take documentation of their names.
5. After capturing the club photos, the Regulus staff tackles two key tasks: typing up the students' names into a Google document and transferring the photos from each camera's SD card for online upload. And we're done!
Sports Media Day
Sports media day is a much calmer version of club photo day but essentially the same procedure: taking photos, documenting names, and transferring them into the yearbook. This process also took place during the summer time in late August to help us stay on task and not fall behind.
My Photography Work
Homecoming, 2023
I was a very excited junior when I was told to go to the senior homecoming to take photos. I took a challenge by taking on this task because it was quite difficult to take photos in a dark space, but it was worth it and I learned a lot of new photography techniques.
Marine Biology Field Trip, 2024
We are covering field trips in the yearbook, so I was assigned to help out and get photos during my marine biology field trip.
Earth Day Exhibition, 2024
My goal for these photos was to experiment with different shallow focuses and camera angles. I also wanted to bring more coverage to student-led organizations at our school, in this case, the Sustainability Club. They spent all day organizing and setting up the gym for this exhibition.
South Stage, 2023
With photography also comes awkwardness, and I definitely experienced the awkward moments when photographing our school's play. They don't allow photographers during the actual performance. So, I went to a rehearsal, yet the whole time I was making noises with my camera when it took a photo. I felt so bad at the time for causing a disturbance but the actors ended up with photos of themselves, so win-win? I think so.
Sporting Events, 2023-4
I love attending sports games and cheering on the team, but I love sitting on the side of the field and taking photos even more. It's such a fun experience and it has taught me how to take photos during tension-inducing moments, where if you miss even a second, you'll miss the perfect shot. It has allowed me to learn the importance of focus and patience.
Film Studies Field Trip, 2024
My mom gave me her old Canon camera as a hand-me-down and it was the best gift ever. I used the camera for these photos and it was also for the field trip spread.
