The Mid Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers (MACCA) has established a scholarship program, that will award up to two deserving students with scholarships up to $1,000 each ($500 for each semester) enrolled in an agronomy related program at an accredited junior college or university. Up to one year after college graduation, recipients will have the opportunity to take the CCA Exam, free of cost. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to students interested in pursuing a career in plant and soil sciences. Given the declining number of students enrolled in agronomy related programs in our region, the Mid Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers believe it is important to encourage students to consider careers in agronomy by supporting their educational needs through financial support.

The National Park Service (NPS) Historic Preservation Training Center's (HPTC) Trades Orientation is scheduled for April 18th. It is an all day event.
This is a great opportunity to expose High School students to the trade work the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center and to also get some additional information about the Traditional Trades Apprentice Program (TTAP).
Last year, students met at the Jenkins Shop Facility located in Frederick to tour the facility and become familiar with the work that HPTC does and the various programs that the NPS supports for youths interested in the trades. After the tour, the students went to Hargett Farm where they participated in a hands-on trades experience with several of HPTC's crafts people. Students were divided into small groups, and they were cycled through the four stations identified below. Several representatives from Preservation Maryland joined for the day and spent time talking with the students as they progressed through the stations to let them know about the various programs that are available to young adults interested in pursuing a career in the trades.
The four stations were:
Architecture - Condition Assessment of the Harget Farmhouse
Carpentry - Wood Shingle Installation
Masonry - Mixing Mortar and Repointing
Wood-crafting - Window Glazing
