John Dougherty was a resident of the Children's Homes from 1947 to 1953
John F. Dougherty, 89, of Williamsport, died Sunday, April 6, 2025 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born in Williamsport, he was a son of the late John F. and Alma M. Dougherty. John and his wife, Janet F. (Solomon) Dougherty, were united in marriage on June 22, 1957 and together they raised two sons.
John graduated from Elizabethtown High School, Lancaster County in June, 1953 followed by his enlistment in the U.S. Army. A graduate of the Topographic Surveying School at Fort Belvoir, VA, his foreign service included a 16 month tour of duty with the U.S. Eighth Army Corps of Engineers in Seoul, South Korea. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
John was honorably discharged from military service in August, 1956 and began working for the former Bank of Newberry in January, 1958. He was a 1967 graduate of the School of Consumer Banking at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. After completing 41 years in the banking industry, John retired from Woodlands Bank in July, 1998.
John enjoyed playing golf with his friends who knew him as "Doc". Doc was proud of his four holes-in-one he made during his 57 years on the links. In 1990, Doc was a co-founder of the Fun Time Golf League at the White Deer Golf Club, Montgomery, PA which still continues in operation today.
Survivors include a son, Lt. Col. Brian K. Dougherty, (United States Air Force, Retired), and his wife, Bernadette Kucharczuk, of Atlantic City, NJ; and a brother, William Dougherty of Coatesville, PA.
John was a member of Trinity Pro-Cathedral Church in Williamsport. John was preceded in death by his wife, Janet F. Dougherty on May 17, 2022 with whom they shared 64 years of marriage; a son, Dennis R. Dougherty on July 23, 1992; and a brother, James W. Dougherty on December 30, 2017.
In keeping with John's wishes, there will be no visitation or services. A private graveside service will be held in Wildwood Cemetery with family in attendance. The family respectfully requests no floral tributes. Remembrances, if desired, may be made in John's name to the Susquehanna Health Foundation, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701 for the benefit of Emergency Medical Services.
