About MHFA.....
Mental Health First Aid was first developed in Australia by two Mental Health professionals who realised that anyone can provide support for Mental Health if they know how. And this support can mean someone is less isolated and better able to contact appropriate professional help or services, and suffers less and recovers more quickly from any issues which may have developed.
Better knowledge of Mental Health also empowers each of us to be less intimidated and more positive and realistic about the realities of our emotional and psychological lives. Some suffering is normal and most of us experience difficulties at some point, but this rarely develops into serious mental illness. Most often, timely support can genuinely help to prevent such a deterioration.
On a Mental Health First Aid course, you'll learn about active and non-judgemental listening, NOT armchair-diagnosing those around you, and what normal mental functioning looks like. You'll also learn about the main types of mental illness and types of support and treatment and how these are accessed in England. The aim of this information is to enable you to signpost to appropriate services, not provide ongoing support yourself or diagnose the people around you. There is a difference between first aid and medically-qualified help!
Finally, you'll learn about self-care and self-help and how to maintain good boundaries and your own well-being. On some courses, you'll also cover the basics of the legal requirements for employers in Health and Safety as it applies to Mental Health. If this is an important aspect of the training for you, please ring us on 07855 529 339 to discuss which course would be most appropriate.
Confidentiality and reflective practice are important aspects of any support role, and Mental Health First Aiders need to consider these aspects of providing Mental Health support. This is why MHFA England courses include access to the MHFA England online support and resource platform.
