Our commitment to supporting trainees at MGH
Our commitment to supporting trainees at MGH
To provide the best possible care for our patients, our health care teams need to have voices from all the populations that make up our community. We thus have a commitment to support all our learners, particularly those from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in medicine, who may face specific challenges. The MGH Center for Academic Development and Enrichment partners with our training programs to support recruitment and retention of trainees, including dedicated mentorship and coaching programs. The office also supports institution-wide training programs on topics including cross-cultural education, unconscious bias, and bystander training as part of the MGH United Against Racism initiative.
As staff of Harvard Medical School, our fellows are also supported by the HMS Office for Culture and Community Engagement. This office supports outreach to recruit students, residents, fellows, and scholars to the HMS community.
The patients and communities we serve
The patients we serve at MGBfC come from numerous communities throughout the Boston metropolitan area and beyond. MGBfC has three vibrant community health centers in Revere, Chelsea, and Charlestown, as well an on-campus practice and a suburban practice in Waltham. Additional Med-Peds practices care for children in the Everett and North End community health centers and the Back Bay practice. We serve as the pediatric referral center for the Cambridge Health Alliance, and we also collaborate with several affiliated health centers and private practices throughout Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Approximately 11% of MGH patients prefer a language other than English for medical communication. The most common languages among our patients are Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Arabic.
During our Pediatrics Grand Rounds series, we hold twice-yearly Health Equity Rounds, during which residents, fellows, and invited speakers discuss a case report in which social determinants of health influenced the care of a patient. These sessions allow us to reflect as a community and renew our commitment to providing optimal care for all.
