On the 17th of April, the Secondary 2 and 3 members of the MGS Choir were invited to sing at the MediaCorp SPD Charity Show 2019, alongside the beneficiaries from the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD), an organisation that aims to serve people with disabilities.
During this event, we sang【夜空中最亮的心】by G.E.M. with other MediaCorp artists during our segment as well as【刚好遇见你】by 李玉刚 Li Yugang for the finale with the other performers.
It was truly a memorable experience as we were able to be a part of this meaningful fundraiser and bring awareness to an unfortunately often marginalised group in Singapore. Through this charity show, we learnt not to take what we have for granted and were reminded to show compassion for others, in both actions and words.
In April 2019, the choir participated in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF). We performed ‘Ave Dulcissima Maria’, composed by our very own conductor Mr Albert Tay, ‘Exultate Justi’, composed by Lodovico da Viadana and arranged by Mr Albert Tay, and ‘What Is That I Hear?’, the set piece by a Singaporean composer, Diana Soh, achieving the Certificate of Distinction award.
From the 14th to 19th of May, the choir flew to Hội An, Vietnam to participate in the 6th Vietnam International Choir Competition held by Interkultur. During our 5 days in Vietnam, we had back-to-back rehearsals with several famous conductors and sang well-known pieces, such as ‘Ecce Crucem Domini’ and ‘Rose of Sharon’, for the competition.
We performed ‘Reach’ by Dick Lee and an abridged version of ‘Londali Bridge’ composed by our conductor, Mr Albert Tay, for the opening ceremony of the competition. We also performed ‘Lauda Sion’ by György Orbán, ‘Exultate Justi’ composed by Lodovico da Viadana and arranged by Mr Albert Tay and ‘H.A.P.P.Y’ by Soprano 1s of 2014 and Mr Albert Tay at the friendship concert.
The MGS Choir participated in 2 categories. We were awarded as the winner with a Golden Diploma Level 3, scoring 23,08 points in the G2 Youth (Under 19) Category. We were also awarded with 2nd place with a Golden Diploma Level 3, scoring 23,47 points in the Sacred Category. We were then nominated and given a chance to perform in the Grand Prix.
It was truly an enriching experience for the MGS Choir. Not only were we able to fly to get to know many wonderful choirs from around the world, we were also given the chance to attend masterclasses conducted by famous conductors during our time in Hội An.
