[UPCOMING] Cantabile 2023! Click for tickets.
In March 2018, the choir collaborated with the MGS Handbell Choir for our biennial concert at the School of the Arts (SOTA) Concert Hall. Titled Cantabile E Carillons, the concert showcased the repertoire of both choirs as well as two joint performances. A combined piece and a piece sang by a solo singer from the choir accompanied by the handbell choir. The choir performed pieces ranging from sacred choral music to livelier songs, including ‘Rose of Sharon’, a piece commissioned by MGS from Dr. Zechariah Goh, and ‘Joyful, Joyful’ from the film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, for our friends and family. During our preparation for the concert, the choir was able to improve in many aspects, one being learning how to sing with dramatisation for a medley of songs from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. With added theatre elements, the choir created an engaging and energetic performance for the audience.
In August 2018, the Secondary 3 members of the choir were invited to sing for the ASEAN director delegates at a dinner organised by Enterprise Singapore. The dinner was held at the Singapore National Gallery, where we performed several locally composed pieces to showcase Singapore’s culture and local composers.
In 2018, the choir had masterclasses with Professor Gerald Wirth, President/Artistic Director of The Vienna Boys Choir, and Ms Jennifer Tham, former MGS Choir Mistress and Cultural Medallion recipient. Invaluable advice on improving our vocal technique, the physical mechanics of the voice, and new ways to warm-up our voices are just a few of the many things we learnt. We greatly benefitted from the masterclasses and are grateful towards Professor Gerald Wirth and Ms Jennifer Tham for the opportunity to gain deeper insights, understanding, and a greater appreciation for singing from their immense expertise.
In November 2018, the choir hosted a choral exchange for five secondary school choirs. After performing for each other, the choirs split into sectionals led separately by our conductors to learn a combined piece, allowing us to experience learning music under a different conductor. We are thankful for this enriching experience and opportunity to interact and share our love for music with the other school choirs.
