The Complete METIS Planner System

Why the name METIS Planner?

Metis was the Greek Goddess of wisdom, planning, advice, and deep thought. She was married to Zeus, and that, of course, led to her share of “Greek” drama in her life. But she did what she needed to do. And she got it done on time, in accordance with her schedule and based on her plan.

How to Use The METIS Planner

How do I get started using the METIS Planner?

All To Do lists included in the METIS Planner include two tracking columns, one labeled Completed and one labeled Scheduled.

If a task is small and can be quickly done, take care of it and mark the Completed O with a check.

If you know a task will take a bit of time, mark the Scheduled O with a check.

Then specifically allocate a block of time in your daily schedule to work on this task.

As you complete any scheduled activity or scheduled To Do item, place a check in the corresponding tracking O so that you know you have completed the activity.

At the end of each day, check your daily schedule and plan additional time for any to do items that do not have a check indicating they were completed.

How do you work with integrated to do lists?

How should you block time in your daily schedule?

For any entry that requires more than one block of time (typically >15 minutes), record the entry beginning at the start time.

For the full time of the activity, you can:

  1. Mark the full duration by shading the minute blocks,
  2. Draw a bracket for the full duration,
  3. Shade the remaining time to note that the time is reserved.

Some users like to color code each type of activity. For example, blue for classes, purple for work, green for social, yellow for extracurricular, and pink for to do’s.

What should you do at the end of each day?

At the end of each day, you should scan that day’s Daily Schedule and review any task that does not yet have a check in the Completed O

  • If the task is no longer required, mark the Completed O with an x so you know the task is no longer needed.
  • If the task is still required, allocate additional time and mark the Completed O with an -> to indicate that you have moved the entry forward.
  • You may also want to also consider using one of the Activity Planner or Project Planner supplemental downloads if the task would be better handled by breaking it into a series of smaller steps.

Additionally, at the end of each day, scan your To Do Lists (weekly, monthly, quarterly or semester, and any project or class specific) and for any unmarked item …

  • Consider adding an entry in the priority column using a scheme that works for you (High/Medium/Low, 1/2/3/4, A/B/C. Red/Yellow/Green) to provide guidance for future days. Remember, however, priorities can change as due dates approach.
  • Consider scheduling specific tasks to ensure that you have planned the time to do what needs to be done and mark that item with a check in the Scheduled O.
  • If the task is no longer required, mark the Completed O with an x so you know the task is no longer needed.
  • If the task is still required, but you want to move it to a future To Do List, mark the Completed O with an -> to indicate that you have moved the entry forward.

Why do Detailed Project Plans and Activity Planners have a letter (A, B, C, etc) in a small box for each major step?

The letter in the box for each major step provides a short hand notation for referring to the entry if you need to allocate time for completing that step. For example, if the Project or Activity is named "Optics" and major step "B" is identified as "Design lab layout to optimize data collection," you could block out time in your daily schedule by indicating, "Optics-B" rather than rewriting the entire entry.

What if I'm prompted to login when I try to access the print at home versions of the METIS Planner or any supplemental content?

If you are not currently logged in to a Google Service with a valid Google account, you will be prompted to either select from a cached list of user names or enter your Google User Name and password. This is expected and needed to access the files that are stored in a secured Google Drive.

What if I get an error message when I try to access the print at home versions of the METIS Planner or any supplemental content?

If you see a 403 error message like the following, it means that the primary account currently logged in to Google does not have access to the requested files.

Many users have multiple Google accounts. Please be sure that the account that is currently logged in is the account that joined METIS20SUP.

If multiple Google Accounts are active at the same time (e.g. using the Google Add Account feature), Google typically defaults permissions to the 1st account that logged in. If you are not sure which account Google is defaulting permissions to, log out of ALL of the active accounts and re-login with ONLY the account that joined METIS20SUP.

Printing and Binding The METIS Planner and Supplemental Page

How do I print the METIS Planner at home/school/work?

Please note that many METIS Planner is designed to be printed 2-sided. Additionally, many supplemental pages will work best if printed as a two sided document. If your printer does not support 2-sided printing, please see Printing Tips for suggestions on how to print 2-sided on a printer that does not natively support duplex (2-sided) printing.

How do I bind a print at home version of the METIS Planner?

After printing the METIS Planner using a duplex printer or using the 2-sided work around described above, there are three basic options that METIS Planner users have successfully utilized to bind their planner:

  1. Use a medium sized 3-ring binder. Load the full printed METIS Planner and any additional supplemental pages directly in the binder.
  2. Use a small 3-ring binder or fastener folder. Load the current semester or quarter into the small binder/folder along with any additional supplemental pages. Keep the remaining pages safely at home/school/work. As time progresses, swap out used pages for unused pages.
  3. Use a disc based binding system such as the ARC System (available at Staples) or the Levenger Circa Disc-bound system (available from Amazon). This approach works best if you like to flip the planner over so that only one page is open at a time. A disc based system also allows pages to be easily added or removed from anywhere in the planner. However, please note that the disc based systems require a special hole punch.

An alternative to printing the METIS Planner at home/school/work is to have the METIS Planner printed at a print shop or office supply store and have them use a coil binding. The downside of the approach is that supplemental pages can not be added directly to the planner, but need to be kept in a separate binder.

Why are there separate print at home downloads for each semester (Academic Edition) and each quarter (Business and Home Edition)?

These separate downloads are provided as a convenience for METIS PLanner users that do not want to print the full planner all at once. Some users want to carry around a subset of the full planner and these separate files make it easier to print what is needed at any given time.

Why are there both 1-sided and 2-sided versions of most supplemental downloads?

The difference between the 1-sided and 2-sided versions of the supplemental downloads is the margin for even numbered pages. In general*, the 1-sided versions have the same margin for all pages, allowing sufficient room for punching holes to bind the pages. The 2-sided versions adjust the spacing of the top/bottom or left/right margins so that the space for holes correctly aligns for 2-sided printouts.

*the 1-sided Teacher Log Book and Teacher Planner are designed to be viewed as a double page spread and as such, the holes for the left side page are to be punched on the right side of the paper.

Why are there two options for the METIS Planner cover?

The original design of the METIS Planner had a black cover. However, many print at home users indicted that the black cover used too much ink and so a white cover option was introduced.
