Book Fair
Date: September 16 - 20, 2024
Location: Amy Snowden Mather Library at MES
join us for the book fair!
Supporting a love for reading is critical to student success. In 2024-2025, we are excited to continue our partnership with Literati for an in-person book fair and a simultaneous Electronic Book Fair.
There will be hundreds of titles to engage our avid readers and inspire our emerging readers - picture books to leveled readers, chapter books to graphics novels and of course so many of the current best sellers!
As always, proceeds from the Book Fair support the MES Library.
When can we shop?
During School Hours: Monday, Sep 16 - Thursday, Sep 19: Students visit the book fair with their class during school hours (schedule coming soon). Caretakers are welcome to join their students during their scheduled book fair class time or shop anytime that is convenient for you from 7:45am - 1:30pm without your student.
Evening Hours: Wednesday, Sep 18, 2:30 - 6:30pm
Before the Bell: Tuesday, Sep 17 and Friday Sep 20, 7:20am to 7:45am
Open Shopping: Friday, Sep 20 from 7:20am to 10am. Students may shop with teacher permission, but caretakers can come anytime up until 10am.
Additionally, an electronic Book Fair is open from Aug 19 to Sep 20, 2024. Search for “Morningside Elementary School” and then start shopping! For some book purchases from the Electronic fair you can have them ship to the school. When delivered they will be brought to students in their classroom. Some book selections ship to home.
Class Scheduled Times: (caregivers welcome!)
What is Browse Day?
During the first visit with their class, students are browsing and thinking about what book(s) look exciting. The idea is that they will bring home a list of books they are interested in to discuss with caregivers and decide as a family what they will purchase or how much, if anything, they will spend. They are given a sheet of paper called a Browse Sheet to write down what books they are interested in.
If the “Browse Sheet” does not make it home, or is illegible, please visit the Electronic Book Fair to gauge book prices.
What is Buy Day?
During the second of the two visits with their class, students are buying from the Book Fair. Not every student is purchasing books at this time, as some families may choose to shop the Electronic Book Fair, shop outside of school hours, or not shop at all.
If you prefer not to send payment in with your student, you can shop with your student during the class shopping time, you can come to the Book Fair Wednesday after school or Thursday or Friday before the morning bell. You can also shop at the Electronic Book Fair. Anything purchased from the Electronic Book Fair will be shipped to the school the week after the In-Person Book Fair and delivered to students in their classroom.
Sometimes, a specific book written on a students' Browse Sheet is not in stock on Buy Day. If that happens, you still have some options:
It is likely for sale on the Electronic Book Fair.
It might be replenished during the week, so check back!
There is a lot of variety at this book fair. Students always find comparable items if their exact book is no longer in stock.
How do we pay?
We will be accepting several forms of payment for the Book Fair:
Cash
Gift cards purchased at the simultaneous Electronic Book Fair. The gift card can be printed out at home and brought to school. Any remaining balance can be redeemed at Literati's website, but cannot be refunded.
Major credit cards
Checks made out to MES PTA; note that no change can be given from a check. This is the least preferred method. Please consider the previous three methods of payments or purchase from the Electronic Book Fair if at all possible instead of using a check.
Can I buy a book for a class library?
Absolutely! Visit the Teacher Book Bins at the fair! These bins will be full of book titles selected by each teacher that will enhance their classroom library. Consider purchasing a book from a bin for a classroom library. When purchased, your child will get to fill out a sticker to their teacher and place it on the inside cover of the book.
How can I make a donation?
Want to extend the Book Fair love a little further this year? Consider an additional donation:
Donate outgrown baby up to preK books: Back by popular demand! Make room on your shelves for new, bigger kid books by donating ones that your family has outgrown! Children Read Atlanta is a 501c3 that collects and repairs new and used books for babies up to PreK (board books, picture books, rhyming books, etc.) ! They distribute them to kids in PreK classrooms of Title 1 Atlanta Public Schools and Dekalb County Schools, in addition to those in Head Start, Sheltering Arms, and other early learning programs serving lower income families.
To contribute, simply drop your outgrown and gently loved baby up to preK level books in the bin set up at the Book Fair. For more questions about this initiative, please contact Marla Johnson.
How can I volunteer?
Volunteer by shopping with your child’s class: We could use your help to run the fair! If you’d like to come with your child’s class you can help to find books, write wish-list items, do math, etc. This is a hands-on volunteer experience with any student who needs help. Please view the browse / buy schedule above if you’d like to volunteer during your students' browse or buy shift. Just remember, when volunteering you are helping the whole class.
Are book vouchers available?
Vouchers will be available for students who may need assistance purchasing books. The voucher distribution process will be coordinated through Mr. LaSalle, the school social worker. Mr. LaSalle will directly communicate with teachers to ensure kids needing support will get their voucher. Teachers or parents/guardians who would like to request vouchers on behalf of certain students should reach out to Mr. LaSalle (scott.lasalle@atlanta.k12.ga.us) for more information or to submit a request.
Please note that the volunteers at the Book Fair are not able to distribute vouchers nor answer questions about specific children as this is private information that is appropriately managed by the school and Mr. LaSalle directly.
