For this assignment, I was instructed to explore and give my opinion on the impact of social media both on me and society using the website given.
These are my results from the “AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA” QUIZ. I think after taking this test, I found it to be true and accurate. I could cut down on how much time I spend on social media, but I'm sure anyone can unless they don't have social media.
When reading the article, I think the most interesting statistic from Social Media Use in 202, Pew Research Center, was the age gaps in usage of certain social media platforms. I think it’s so crazy how in the past four years, it feels like it has changed so much with older generations, mainly the 30-49 and 50-64 age groups, using social media like TikTok and Instagram way more. I feel every time I look over someone’s shoulder in those age groups, they are always just scrolling on Facebook or asking me about whether I saw a certain post they made.
I think social media has both a positive and negative impact on society. For example, I can easily find people and groups with the same interests as me. Though an example of the negative impacts is the way bigger organizations have been using social media as a joke for serious issues, and though at certain times it can be somewhat funny, it overall has been causing the media and population a lot of distress. I think the impact of social media relies a lot on how you use it as an individual, but you cannot always control exactly what pops up on your screen. In this current moment, I’d say the negatives outweigh the positives regarding social media usage.
I think something I learned from this is how negative and misused social media has become. I was also able to see the trends of social media over time. The basis of everything is very similar, but it’s also so different at the same time. I think I could use my phone a little less than I do now.
