Use High-Quality Insulation
When you think of insulation, you might think it keeps heat trapped in the winter. While true, high-quality batt insulation also keeps heat out in the summer. The fiberglass helps your walls repel heat and keep the cool air from escaping.
Even if your house is already built and the drywall installed, check for areas that might not be insulated. Attics, garages, and unfinished bedrooms can all let heat in if they aren’t adequately insulated.
Apply Heat Control Film to Your Windows
While it’s nice to let in the light from the sun, in the summer, you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible. One way to get the best of both worlds or even add to the protection of your curtains is with heat control film on your windows.
Low reflective heat film helps reject the sun’s heat and can even block UV rays, protecting your interior décor and furniture. Plus, it’s easy to install and will pay huge dividends when you can relax in your home in the middle of the day.
Keep Your Interior Doors Open
Airflow is vital to keeping your home cool. Stagnant air weighs on you and keeps the warm air stuck instead of moving it around and cooling it down.
To help with this, keep all of your interior doors open: bathrooms, bedrooms, and especially living rooms and offices. This is the next best thing to an open floor plan and helps everything cool off just a bit.
Bonus tip: Use fans to promote circulation through rooms. Set up fans in doorways to move the air out and around. Even in bigger spaces, you can set up small fans on shelf brackets around the room to move air in a circle and get it to cool down.
Replace Your Light Bulbs
Incandescent light bulbs can generate more heat than you want on days already pushing triple digits. Replace them with LED bulbs from your home improvement store to give your home that extra bit of cooling you need. LED bulbs produce softer light and generate a lot less heat. Plus, LED bulbs are a great option to save on your budget in the long run.
Cook Outside More
Grill masters everywhere are going to love this tip. Ovens and stoves create unnecessary heat when you’re trying to keep everything cool. So, if you’re cooking for the family, consider grilling more often. If you have a shaded porch, even better. But grilling in the evenings gets you some fresh air, good food, and keeps the house from heating up.
