Some home repair projects can easily be put off until you have time to get to it. These are things like loose cabinet hardware, squeaky door hinges, and chipped paint in the hallway. They can be annoying, but they probably aren’t safety hazards or energy sinks. However, some repairs and fixes may need to be addressed immediately.
Flex Paste
These kinds of repairs can lead to bigger problems sooner or later. Some of these issues may require little more than a container of Flex Paste, while others may be a bit more involved. If you notice any of these types of issues around your home, make a plan to fix them as soon as possible.
Interior Leaks and Exterior Gaps
Leaks can go from minor to major in an instant. This includes moisture leaks, as well as air leaks, such as gaps in door frames and windows. If you notice any water staining on a ceiling, water accumulation on floors or in corners, or dripping pipes, try to find the source of the leak. In some cases, fixing the leak may take little more than a visit to your favorite home improvement store and a quick patch job.
Some fixes may be more involved. If there’s a gap in a door frame, for instance, you may need to do work on a part of the frame to close the gap. Serious gap issues, like those related to deteriorating door frames, may require a new frame and door, depending on the situation.
It’s also a good time to check interior door frames and doors for gaps. A good interior door can help with home climate control, improving your energy efficiency. The same can be said about addressing any leaks or gaps. Taking care of them now can save you big on energy bills and repair costs in the future.
Damaged or Deteriorated Caulk
This is another issue that comes back to moisture. You’ve probably experienced deteriorating caulking or seals around a bathtub or window. It’s easy to let these kinds of issues slide. They’re often not an immediate sign something’s wrong—outside of the peeling seal, anyway.
However, something much more sinister can be happening behind the scenes, and it can be costly. Deteriorating caulking and sealant can encourage moisture buildup in these areas. Over time, water can cause moisture damage where you can’t see it. At the same time, moisture buildup can encourage mold growth—black mold included—which can be a health hazard. Don’t wait around to recaulk the tub, sinks, or windows. It’s a quick fix that can save you tons of future headaches.
Anything Electrical
If you notice any issues with your home’s electricity or any of the circuits within your home, take notice. These are issues that go beyond a burned-out lightbulb. These are things like flickering or dimming lights in a room or the whole house when something else powers on (like the HVAC system or an appliance).
At the same time, if a light switch or electrical outlet suddenly stops working, that can be a sign of a bigger issue, as can excess heat coming from the wall near or at a switch or outlet. Electrical “oddities” can all be signs of a larger problem and can be very dangerous if not addressed ASAP. If you’re comfortable addressing electrical issues, you may be able to get to the bottom of the problem—but don’t hesitate to call a licensed electrician if something is amiss.
