Zoid Spawn: Where Music, Family and Community Meet

What happens when life is treated like a video game — where we have limited lives, the chance to “respawn”, and the choice to keep playing with courage and heart?

This is the playful yet deeply human idea behind Zoid Spawn, the new theatrical production created by South African rock icon Karen Zoid and her son, Ben Francis, together with long-time collaborator Anton Eloff.

At its heart, the production is a story about life, family, music and the sometimes chaotic joy of being part of a team. It unfolds as a living conversation between mother and son, combining Karen’s powerful songs, Anton’s cinematic piano and Ben’s immersive visual landscapes. The boundaries between concert, theatre and visual installation gently disappear, creating an experience filled with music, emotion and connection.

The approximately 100-minute production, including an interval, is suitable for audiences aged 13 and older.

A special Melkbosstrand moment

Zoid Spawn comes to the Melkbosstrand NG Kerk on 11th Avenue on Friday, 25th, and Saturday, 26th, September 2026, as part of the Melkbos Art/Film Festival period — with a very special local addition: the Melkbosstrand High School Choir.

There is something truly meaningful about giving young performers the opportunity to share a professional stage with established artists. It tells them that their voices matter, their talent is valued, and that there is a place for them in the world of music and the arts.

Karen Zoid has long been known for generously sharing her platform and creating opportunities for the next generation. In Melkbosstrand, this spirit becomes an especially beautiful part of the production as experienced artistry and youthful energy come together under the same lights.
