Royston U3A is now beginning to fly, having started up in 2018. There is a Golf Croquet session for regulars on Monday mornings during the season and also the occasional opportunity to mingle with other U3As.
Entry to the group, if you have never played before, is via a beginners course. Further courses are planned in order to build up the number of regular players.
Golf croquet is becoming more and more popular. Many local clubs have already moved to a waiting list, so joining the new Royston Group is an opportunity to learn something very special and take part in a game for life. (There are players in their nineties out there!)
Joining the Group
To join in, you must be a member of Royston U3A. Once a member of Royston U3A, you will receive the contact details for the Croquet group and you will receive a monthly newsletter that details what the Croquet group have been doing.
Unless you have played Golf Croquet before, you would normally take a Beginners course to familiarise yourself with the game. There is an early season beginners course planned for 2020. It is popular so you need to get in touch with the Croquet Groups contact as given in the Royston U3A literature and ask to be put on a register of interest. This will enable you to be one of the first to hear about new courses.
Bear in mind the number eligible to join the course is dependent on the capacity of the lawn to take new players. We can manage 16 in the group reasonably.
If you do decide to join the Croquet Group, bear in mind there is a green fee per session of £3. This money together with other club income provides for the upkeep of the lawn and equipment (second hand lawn mowers of the right size are approx £4000) as well as the provision of replacement mallets (over £140 each) and other equipment.
