The lawn is approximately 30 yards behind and beyond the Car Park of the British Queen Pub, High Street, Meldreth.

Beside the lawn is the club hut containing the hoops and markers for laying out the lawns and also the equipment, which members can use for playing. There is also a small lounge area there as well.

And of course there is the pub - a great refreshment facility close at hand. We are able to use these facilities with the kind permission of the Landlord of the British Queen.

The club is a member of the Croquet Association which provides:- insurance cover, information resources of benefit to players, development paths for match playing players, as well as ensuring the game's rules are properly interpreted..

During the season the lawn is mowed approx twice a week. Lawn feed and selective weedkiller is added at intervals to keep the lawn in ideal condition. At the end of the season, the lawn is levelled (lawn dressing). At the beginning of the season the lawn is relaid out to avoid any runs that might have developed underneath the hoops.

The club has sufficient equipment to lend a mallet to 16 players which is the full capacity of the two short lawns.

Most members, within a couple of years or so of joining the club usually go on to buy their own mallets. There are several UK suppliers. The club uses Percival Mallets, amongst others, for many of its standard club mallets. Recent players, and some existing club players, have purchased Dave Barrat Mallets. There is advice for purchasing mallets on the Croquet associations website here . Also Oxford Croquet has some advice, and a list of mallet manufacturers here Do note that the club does not permit well used wooden mallets with brass ring ends, in order to prevent damage to the balls. If in doubt, speak to a committee member.

Croquet is a very safe game and you are much less at risk on a croquet lawn than walking along many public footpaths.

In addition, it is essential you have good balance without the aid of a stick, as you will need to swing a mallet that can weigh between two and three pounds. You also need to be comfortable in moving around a lawn and standing up for 1-2 hours.

Croquet has some advantages during COVID times as it is an outside game with almost natural social distancing.
