Freeways in and out of Melbourne are Being Stressed

Melbourne's Roads are Seeing Increasing Congestion, and Lack the Capacity to Maintain Travel Times

The map below displays Melbourne's average annual daily traffic volume (AADT) in 2020 by road. As you may expect, the freeways see the greatest number of passengers.

One of the most densely traveled roads is the West Gate Freeway, which is particularly busy in the Fisherman's Bend area.

The MM2 would significantly help to take the transportation load off off this road, through the introduction of the Fisherman's bend tunnel. Additionally, this tunnel will decrease the length of the rail line by about 2 km from the current line, which goes around the Yarra River.

With the use of public transit, travel time is not affected by traffic. This means that travel times are far more consistent than that of private transit, in addition to being reduced.
