Below are two interactive maps made in Tableau that show the distribution of jobs in Victoria.
The regions are based on Statistical Area Twos (SA2) and Local Government Areas (LGA) respectively as determined by the Australian census.
Feel free to move the map around, zoom in or out and hover over each location for specific data on job distribution!
Some of the key areas to look into in the CBD would be Melbourne and Docklands, with 8.1% and 2.1% of all jobs in Victoria respectively.
In the North, areas such as Thomastown and Mernda have 0.5% and 0.1% respectively whereas in the West, areas such as Werribee South and Wyndham Vale 0.3% and 0.1% respectively.
As mentioned earlier, 8.1% of all jobs in Victoria are located in the Melbourne SA2, which makes up most of the CBD. The areas surrounding it, such as the Docklands, Southbank, Parkville, South Melbourne, East Melbourne, North Melbourne and Carlton have 2.1%, 1.4%, 1.0%, 1.0%, 0.7%, 0.6% and 0.6% respectively for a total of 15.5% of all jobs in Victoria in this relatively small area. To compare, the region in the West with the largest percentage of jobs in Victoria is Laverton with 0.7%, with the next highest being Altona North at 0.5%. Selecting the twenty SA2 regions west of the CBD from Newport and Williamstown to Wyndham Vale and Werribee totals to 3.8% of all jobs in Victoria. A similar story can be seen in the North, where 24 regions from Carlton North and Fitzroy North to Mernda account for 3.9% of all jobs in Victoria. This large disparity in job location compared to where citizens live suggests that that residents of both the inner and outer suburbs are likely to need to travel to the CBD for work, since most jobs are located there.
The map below is the same except now the regions are based on LGA's.
