I chose to pursue this project so that I could better understand the experience of the immigrant in the United States and how it relates to higher education. The idea stemmed from women's rights, but was largely influenced by the practices of immigration reform which brought me to a bigger picture; migrant women are more threatened in this country than that of women born to this country. The massive history that has practiced oppression was founded on migration, we all came from somewhere, yet the United States still treats those fleeing other countries with disproportionate attitude and credibility. This aligns with the overall idea of beliefs and perspectives had by the American society. The outcome of migration also enforces the social constructs of race, ethnicity, gender and class, and often times can drive people apart before they even have the time to say hello. This is an ultimate truth due to lack of understanding of cultural difference in American society.
The goal of my project was to hear the voice of the Migrant student over the chatter of college administration. Institutions have a cabinet of deciding forces that permit others to conform to the belief that "all is well". Time and time again, those in need are overlooked for the collective or the overall image of an institution. These are practices that fail people from reaching their protentional and providing for themselves and their families. No one is necessarily to blame, but students may feel fearful to speak up, and due to this withdrawal and lack of information, the administration may feel that things are fine. In this I wanted to be able to hear the voice or the Student to the best of their ability.
