The one day sightseeing tour of Vellore begins with the visit to the Ratnagiri Murugan Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. Experience an up-close look at the magnificent sacred site set on the hill top.
Devotees worship Lord Murugan in two forms one as Lord Thirukkolam seen with his wives Valli and Devasena and the other as Lord Gurukkolam.
This sacred spot also houses small idols of Ganesha, Dakshinamurthy, Murugan, Brahma, Durga and Chandikeshwara. The presiding deity was installed in a chariot made of granite.
Tower above the sanctum sanctorum also called as Garbhagriha is built in Chola style of architecture and made of granite. Lord Vinayaka can be worshipped at the top of the hill and another at the bottom of the hill.

One of the favourite sightseeing spots of the one day Chennai to Vellore tour is the Vellore Fort spread over an area of 133 acres. A splendid mosque, inspiring church and a holy temple situated within the fort add to the cultural appeal.
It is considered to be an iconic fort as it was in this fort that the first ever revolt against the British took place. Indian sepoys fired into the European Barracks and killed them. It is in this fort that the Britishers had held Tipu Sultan’s family and Sri Lanka’s king, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha as prisoners.
The captivating fort was built in the 14th century during the Vijayanagara Empire and served as the headquarters of the Aravidu Dynasty. Control of the fort passed over to the Bijapur Sultans and then to the Marathas.
Carnatic Nawabs took over the control of the fort from the Marathas before the entry of the Britishers. Constructed within a mountain range the fort is surrounded by a deep and wide moat and raises to a height of 220 m.
There is an escape tunnel that leads to Virinjipuram at a distance of 12 km. Public houses are also built within the Fort. This stunning fort steeped in history is a must visit for the travellers visiting Vellore.
It has been built with granite blocks which were brought in from nearby districts of Arcot and Chittoor.

The next stop over of our one day Vellore local sightseeing tour is one of the iconic landmarks of Vellore, the impressive Vellore Museum. Established on 6th September 1985 in the Lutchaswamy Town Hall, the Government Museum was later shifted to the Fort in April 1999.
Set at an area of 5000 square feet the informative museum showcases more than 2896 exhibits through the well preserved eight galleries. These splendid galleries include the District Gallery, Stone sculpture gallery, Prehistory-philately gallery, Paintings gallery, and Zoological gallery, Bronze Gallery, Coins Gallery and Anthropology Gallery.
Visitors would be delighted viewing the bronze double antenna sword that dates back to 400 BC. Other noteworthy artefacts includes stone sculptures from the late Pallava to the Vijaynagar periods, Ivory chess boards and coins that were used by Vikrama Rajasinha, five stone cannonballs, two gun powder flasks and two iron cannons.

The Jalakandeswarar Temple situated in the Vellore Fort is dedicated to Lord Shiva and exemplifies the excellent craftsmanship skills. Tourists are greeted by the splendid eight feet high dwarapalakas at the entrance. It has an underground chamber called the Neerazhi Mandapam which is believed to be a passage leading to the Palar River.
Devotees can also worship Goddess Mahishasura Mardini who appears in the temple tramping the demon under her feet. Visitors would be amazed to see the seven tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance.
The sacred temple was earlier known as Jvarakandeswara and has been built at a lower height than the temple moat. A noteworthy feature of the temple is the striking Kalyana mandapam adorned with the beautifully carved pillars.
It also enshrines Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramanya with his consorts Valli and Devayani, Kala Bhairava, Saneeswarar and 63 Nayanmars.
