One day Chennai to Thirunallar trip starts with the visit to the famous Thirunallar Saneeswara Temple. A sacred temple dedicated to Lord Saneeswara and Lord Dharbaranyeswara, the manifestation of Lord Shiva.
Legends state that it was in this place that Lord Saneeswara had lost all his powers to Lord Shiva. This holy place is also well known for the notable contributions made in the history of Tamil Literature.
It is believed that the transition from one Zodiac sign to another zodiac sign is made once in every three years and during this auspicious day devotees throng the temple to pay their obeisance to Lord Saneeswara. Lord Dharbaranyeswara appears along with his consort Bhogamartha Poon Mulayar called as Praneshwari.
Among the holy ponds of the temple namely Nala Theertham, Brahma Theertham and Saraswathi Theertham, Nala Theertham is considered to be the most auspicious.
Legends state that King Nala had taken bath in this Theertham and worshipped the Lord here which had relieved him of the miseries that arose due to the effects of Saturn. As such the place is known as Nallaru where Nala refers to King Nala and the word aru means healing.
As a common practice devotees take bath in this pond before proceeding to the main shrine with the belief that all their misfortunes would be washed out. Renowned saints Appar, Sundarar, Thirugnanasambandar and Manickavasagar , the famous 63 Nayanmars, Lord Ganesha and Lord Murugan are the other deities enshrined in the temple.
Majestic Rajagopuram decorated with striking carvings and sculptures adorn the temple’s beauty. Elegant mandapams and corridors add to the charm of the temple. It is also notable for the story of Pachchai Padigam written here in praise of the Lord.

Devotees are greeted with a glorious three tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance.
Punithavathi was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Her husband Paramadatta realised her divinity and left her alone. He moved to another place and married another girl. When Punithavathi had come to know about her husband’s second marriage she pleaded Lord Shiva to make her look older.
She turned to be an old lady and moved to Mount Kailash with her head upside down. Since then recognizing her devotion and her divinity a temple was built in Karaikal by Malai Perumal Pillay in 1929.
