Devotees worship the idol of Goddess Kamatchi Amman who is seated in a majestic padmasana holding sugarcane bow and bunch of flowers in the lower two arms. An image of a parrot near the flower bunch adds charm to the idol of the presiding deity.
Hailed as one of the fifty one Shakti Peethas, it is the only Parvati temple in the town. Admire the golden tower or gopuram over the sanctum sanctorum.
Spread over 5 acres of land it showcases ancient culture and heritage. Gaze at the well maintained gallery representing the life history of Adi Shankaracharya.
Set in the centre of the town, its layout represents the magnificence of Dravidian Architecture. Ka is referred to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education while Ma refers to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
Akshi means eyes as such the name Kamakshi signifies that Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati are the two eyes of the presiding deity. Travellers would be spellbound with the statue of Kalabhairava on the left side of the main entrance and the impressive statue of Mahishasura Mardini on the right side of the main entrance.

Travellers would be fascinated with the magnificence of the sacred shrine of Varadharaja Perumal Temple as the next stop of our one day Chennai to Kanchipuram.
Built in 1053, the temple is thronged with devotees especially the followers and believers of Vishnu as it is one of the 108 Divyadesams. A high tower or the gopuram at the entrance is 180 feet long adorned with beautiful structures on it. Gopuram over the sanctum sanctorum is 96 feet tall.
An important feature of the temple are the golden and silver lizards carved on the ceiling. Devotees worship and touch the images of the lizards to get rid of their sins and relieve themselves from the misfortunes that may be caused due to the fall of lizards on them.
Adjacent to the lizard images there are the images of moon and sun. A stunning feature of the sacred shrine is the 100 pillared hall carved out of a single rock. The presiding deity is Lord Varadaraja Perumal, the manifested form of Lord Vishnu appearing in the standing position.
It is believed that the original idol of the deity is 40 feet long. This idol of Lord Athi Varadaraja Perumal is in reclining form and made of Athi wood which is worshipped for ten days once in 40 years.
The marvellous temple exhibiting Dravidian style of architecture is also referred to as Hastagiri, where hasta means elephant and giri means hill. Legends state that the deity is Swayamvastaka that means it is self manifested. Devotees flock the temple during the festivals of Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, Purattasi Navarathri and Vaikunta Ekadasi.

The favourite sightseeing spot of our one day Kanchipuram trip guests have been Vaikunda Perumal Temple. An ancient architectural and spiritual complex constructed by Pallava King Nandivarman II in 690 CE has been built in Dravidian style of architecture.
One of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vaikuntanatha, the manifestation of Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi as Vaikunda Valli. Cholas and the Vijaynagar made considerable additions to the temple which is surrounded by a granite wall enclosing all shrines.
It also has a temple tank called Airammadha and an amazing Vimanam. Devotees can worship Lord Vaikuntanatha in reclining, standing and seated postures. Archaeological Survey of India maintains the ancient temple.

Adorned with wonderful entrances having soaring towers called the gopurams the vast sacred shrine enchants every visitor. The highest tower among them is the 11 storied gopuram (south tower) with a height of 55 meters.
An important characteristic feature is the thousand pillared hall or the Aayiram Kaal Mandapam built during the Vijayanagar period.

Pay your obeisance at the Kumarakottam to Lord Muruga who appears holding a rudraksha and a kamandalu. An ancient spiritual complex enshrines several images of other deities. More popular as Subramanya Swami temple it has the presiding deity as Lord Murugan depicted as Brahma Shasta.
Admire the wonderful architecture and an amazing circular shaped dome above the sanctum sanctorum. Have two prakarams and several deities in separate shrines. The Shiva Linga worshipped by Lord Murugan is set in a separate shrine called the Devasenapathi Sar or Senapathi Ishvara.
Silk Sari Shopping, Kanchipuram
