It is considered auspicious bringing their child first to this holy temple before taking them to any other temple. Lord Ganesha was more popular here as Bhavaneswar Ganapathy.
Remarkable features of the temple are the beautifully carved incarnations of Lord Ganesha on the walls of the temple. It is said that the French Jesuits and missionaries tried to demolish the temple however it was saved by the Hindus.
As there was a pond near the temple with lot of sand, the deity is referred to as Manakula Vinayagar where in Manal means sand and Kulam means pond in Tamil. The spiritual complex lies over an area of 8000 sq feet and has beautiful outer mandapam and Maha Mandapam.
Visitors would admire the kodi kambam plated in gold and rising to a height of 18 feet. Golden Vimanam and the 7.5kg golden chariot are the key attraction of the temple. According to legends a famous saint named Thollaikkathu Siddhar attained Samadhi in the premises of this temple 300 years ago.

It is a treasure trove of the Chola and Pallava dynasty historical relics. Bronze gallery exhibiting a range of god and goddess and the varied lamps used during the different dynasties resonate the rich Indian heritage.
A section of the museum depicts the rare artefacts from the Roman Empire. Notable items include fossilized trunks of the ancient tree, collection of coins, handicrafts, terracotta figures, crockery, guns and swords.

A notable stop of the one day Chennai to Pondicherry tour is the visit to the War Memorial located on the Goubert Avenue in White Town opposite to the Gandhi statue.
The memorial was developed with the efforts of the sculptor Gaston Petit and architect Delafon as a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country in World War I. Inaugurated in 1938 by the then governor Crocchia it was built with the aim to remember the war experience and the bravery of the soldiers.
This well designed glorious war memorial has four white pillars and a statue of a soldier bending down and holding a rifle. There is an inscription stating “aux combatants des Indes Françoise morts pour la Patrie, 1914-1918” which means that French fighters who died for their country in 1914-1918. Names of the brave soldiers can be seen on a bronze plaque on the wall of the monument.

Stop by the Gandhi Statue located opposite to the War Memorial. A four meter high figure of the father of nation encircled with awe inspiring eight striking granite pillars is a must visit site. These pillars were brought from Gingee fort located at a distance of 70 km from Pondicherry and erected in 1866.
A tunnel runs below the statue leading to the fort of Gingee. Gandhi statue was inaugurated on January 26 1965. Sculptor Roy Chaudhary had created this iconic statue that is considered as one of the biggest Gandhiji statues in the world.
