Everything, even sweeping, scraping vegetables, weeding a garden, and waiting on the sick could be a prayer, if offered to God.
– St. Martin de Porres
EARLY LIFE
In a sunny land called Peru, lived a boy named Martin. Born to a family with mixed backgrounds, Martin wasn't always treated fairly. He faced challenges because of who he was, but that didn't stop him from being a kind and helpful friend.
As a young boy, Martin became an apprentice to a barber-surgeon. This meant he learned how to cut hair and even helped with simple medical treatments. He was curious and eager to learn all he could about taking care of others.
MARTIN'S CALLING
When he grew a little older, Martin felt a strong desire to serve God. He joined a group of people called Dominicans, who dedicated their lives to helping others. Although Martin couldn't become a full-fledged Dominican because of the times he lived in, he became a lay brother, which meant he could still help in important ways.
At the age of 34, Martin was given a special responsibility: taking care of the Infirmary, the place where sick people went to get better. He used all the knowledge he gained as a young apprentice to help sick brothers and even people outside the Dominican community. He didn't care if they were rich or poor, everyone received his gentle care and kindness.
MARTIN AS A MISSIONER
Martin was known for his compassion and dedication. He would even bring the most sick and injured people into the friary, offering them his own bed to rest in. He used simple remedies like herbs and water to help them heal, but many people believed there was a special touch to his kindness that helped them recover even faster.
Although some people thought he might have magical powers, Martin always stayed humble and focused on helping others. He believed that everyone deserved to be treated with respect and care, no matter their background or situation. This is why he's remembered today as a kind and dedicated healer, a true example of how helping others can bring light and hope into the world.
