In Service of
the Indigents
Medical Missions, Inc. is a charitable, non-stock, non-political, non-sectarian association. It is the first organization of its kind in the Philippines. The main means used by the association to attain its objectives it the organization of medical missions or sending of mission teams to areas (mission field) that request its services
Mission Teams
It is formed in accordance with the needs of the areas to be served. On account that most of the members of the association are busy in the university during class time, mission teams are sent to the rural areas only during school vacation.
Medical Consultations
Fortunately, the vast majority of the people, even in the rural areas, is already well acquainted with the value of Modern Medicine. Still, among these there are many who, because of poverty, cannot make full use of it. Moreover, physicians are not always available in those areas. And certainly outside the big cities there is little chance for patients to come across medical specialists.
Surgical Operations
All throughout the Islands there is a considerable number of poor people who are in need of surgical treatment for a great variety of diseases. Government provincial and emergency hospitals cannot accommodate all of them, handicapped as they usually are by a lack of facilities and of sufficiently trained medical and surgical staff.
Field Exposure for Students
Medical students go on Missions for the purpose of helping the physicians in their work. In a sense, it is also a teaching program for them. In the rural areas they see many morbific manifestations that are not common in Manila. Cases of exceptional interest are brought to their attention and discussed for their benefit. In this way, the training that medical students receive in the classroom and teaching hospitals is supplemented by their work in the Missions.
Another important objective pursued by the inclusion of medical students in Mission Teams is to familiarize them with the health conditions of the Indigent and to prepare them to be of greater service to those unfortunate people now as students and later as physicians.
Training for Doctors
True to its vision of providing continuing medical education, medical missions catered by the organization provide an excellent avenue for discussion amongst physicians about the epidemiology and management techniques for patients in need, most especially of those contracting rare diseases. The organization prides itself for not only serving the indigents but also those its constituents by each learning they earn from every mission.
Scientific Studies
Another objective of the Medical Missions is to conduct surveys and make studies on the health conditions of the areas served by Mission Teams and on the difficulties they present and finally to offer practical answers to them. Upon their request, reports and recommendations are sent to the local civil, medical and ecclesiastical authorities. The Association also intends to acquaint as many people as possible, especially in the Medical Profession, with those problems in order to arouse a wide interest and enlist a much needed cooperation towards their permanent solution.
