This lesson can help students think more critically about online safety and the importance of being saavy to online scams.
Goals
Raise awareness about online scams.
Raise awareness about the importance of protecting passwords / web logins.
Develop "click restraint" (Check your emotions!)
Encourage students to talk with their parents and other adults in their lives about these issues.
Preparation
Start to play both of the videos included in this lesson (embedded to the right) in the location where you will be teaching the lesson, to verify they are accessible (not blocked) and the audio can be turned up loud enough for all students to hear.
Watch both videos in advance to familiarize yourself with the content and ideas.
Procedures
Discuss advertising and how different people and groups want to GET OUR ATTENTION to make us THINK about something or ACT in a certain way. (Use these example advertisement photos)
Show students the video, "Scams That Should Be Illegal" by @theodd1sout
Use the thinking strategy "See, Think, Wonder" to discuss and explore the themes in the video.
Extensions
Show students the video, "Get An Engagement Ring" (YouTube) and "The Spinner - Animated Explainer Video" (YouTube).
Visit the referenced website, www.thespinner.net together, and discuss the ethics of people who use this website. (Reference: Forbes, Jan 2019)
