What exactly is a triage judge? This is the first round of judging to separate the great from the good from the not so good. We will be responsible for making a quick read of papers and assigning a score. This score will be combined with a score from another judge to place the paper in a category. Some of the weaker papers will not be read by anyone after triaging.
How long does it take? On average papers take about 10-15 minutes to read. The weaker ones will be less and the better ones a little longer. The first 3 papers seem to take the longest as you calibrate the scoring.
How many papers am I expected to rate? New judges generally rate 30-50 papers
When does this happen? The next contest will be Jan 29 - Feb 2, 2026. So, this work will need to be completed Feb 23 - March 30, 2026.

Get to know your colleagues a little better.
What problem will the students be solving? The problems are not announced until January 29th at 5pm EST. Problems from previous years are available on the contest website and mathmodels.org.
Can I be the advisor for a student team and be a triage judge? Triage judges CANNOT be the advisor for a team on the problem they are grading. It is fine to triage for other problems. For example, if your students solve the E problem, then you cannot triage for the E problem. The integrity of this contest is very important to maintain. We do not want any situation that may look like a team may get an unfair advantage.
