New monument unveiled honoring sacrifice of Navy Corpsman at Camp Lejeune Memorial Gardens -- October 12, 2022
Wherever there is a Marine engaged in combat, a Navy corpsman is not far. Since the American flag was raised on Iwo Jima by five Marines and one corpsman, the threads of the United States Navy Hospital Corpsman have been sewn into the battle flag of the United States Marine Corps. It is this group of gallant warriors that was recognized at the Corpsman Memorial, Camp Lejeune Memorial Gardens, Jacksonville, NC.
The statue lovingly called "Doc" depicts a life-size corpsman shielding a wounded Marine from further injury. It was created by artist Abbe Godwin of Colfax, North Carolina. "CORPSMAN UP!" Thank you member Steve Stoll.

No Man Left Behind sculpture, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, North Carolina by John Phelps based on the Operation Phantom Fury photograph “Hell House” of then First Sergeant Bradley Kasal being carried out of a house by two lance corporals after a firefight where Kasal sustained life-threatening injuries. The sculpture symbolizes the brutality of the fighting and the spirit of the Marines who sacrificed themselves for their brothers.
With no national monument yet commemorating America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the statues, with a second statue at the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA, have become a pilgrimage site of sorts for Marines getting promoted or retiring.
Read the book: My Men Are My Heroes: The Brad Kasal Story (Leatherneck Classics) by Brad Kasal & Nathanial Helms.
