Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) is a citizenship and leadership development program based at Mayde Creek High School. The program objectives are to develop citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. The Navy JROTC academic curriculum also emphasizes our maritime heritage and history, the significance of sea power on the world. It also focuses on fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation, and nautical sciences as well as physical fitness (NJROTC counts as a Texas State Physical Education credit).
Leadership studies emphasize individual character development through increased self-discipline, dependability, and teamwork. The NJROTC unit is cadet lead organization. NJROTC cadets achieve their educational objectives by working within the framework of a military style organization that offers them opportunities for travel to interesting destinations, as well as participation in unique extracurricular activities and numerous community service events. Individual cadets are encouraged to seek and attain promotions to military cadet ranks that will enable them to achieve the levels of individual responsibilities they desire. Every activity is an opportunity for cadets to practice both followership and leadership.
Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, military close-order drill competitions, field meets, visits to military activities, marksmanship training, and other skills training. Uniforms, textbooks, and training aids are funded by the Navy.
While based at Mayde Creek High School (MCHS), the program is open to any Katy ISD high school student. Non-MCHS student are called “cross-campus” cadets and must be able to have their 6th period scheduled as a study hall and 7th period as NJROTC. Katy ISD will provide bus transportation for cross-campus cadets from their home campus to MCHS during 6th period. Cadets who have transportation may travel to MCHS on their own. Katy ISD will provide bus transportation back to their home campus, departing from MCHS at 4:30 PM, allowing cadets an opportunity to participate in after school activities.
Students interested in NJROTC must talk to their high school counselor and choose NJROTC as an elective course. Student can take NJROTC at any time during their high school career. The full program provides instruction opportunities as a full 4-year program.
