My name is Nohri Nunez. I'm a high school senior and I've been doing Running Start at Everett Community College (EvCC) for the last two years.
Helping others has always been one of my passions. In high school, I joined several service clubs such as Key Club and National Honor Society. From there, I found the Marysville Community Food Bank, and I've been volunteering there regularly since October of 2023.
Although I've always had a passion for community service and volunteering, it wasn't until earlier this year that I began taking an interest in social justice.
In the fall quarter of 2024, I took Dr. Steven Horn's American Government class at EvCC. During this period, the world as I knew it was changing rapidly. With the announcement that Donald Trump had won the election, I was terrified for what it would mean for me and my community. The following day, Dr. Horn told us that if we were unhappy with the results, the best thing to do would be to go out and try to get involved and make a difference. Although I was too young to do anything politically, I knew that I could help out in my local community. Hearing this brought a surge of new energy into me, and I realized that if I wanted things to get better, I would have to take things into my own hands.
This is what led me to take the From Inquiry to Civic Action class at EvCC, taught by Phebe Shen and Omar Marquez. Through this class, I learned how to effectively support my community and participate in social justice. When we were given the opportunity to lead and create a social justice project, I immediately knew that I wanted to use my connections at the Marysville Community Food Bank.
After talking with Michelle Eno, the assistant director of the Marysville Community Food Bank, I narrowed my focus to their Home Delivery program. Unlike the in-person clients of the Food Bank, Home Delivery clients don’t have the option of choosing their food. They’re further limited by what can fit in their packages and what stock is left to give out by the end of the week. Because of these limitations, I wanted to make sure that the needs of Home Delivery clients were still being addressed and prioritized.
