As the Working Group wraps up Schematic Design mid-February, Phase II of the McCall Expansion Project has taken a very different architectural shape from what was originally envisioned in the Master Plan -- though it still contains the same components identified.
While the remodeling of a Teacher Workspace/Meeting Room and Cafeteria expansion are consistent with the specific recommendations of the Master Plan, the Working Group explored other options for the multi-story 6-classroom addition. The classroom addition was originally attached to the Library Wing, but has been re-designed as an extension of the E-Wing (built in 2007-08) and includes the athletic space on the ground floor. This shift in location:
This new approach to the classroom addition is a four-story extension of the E-wing, with three floors of classrooms (two per floor) on top of a grade-level athletics space program including two new team rooms, trainer's room, and new public toilets accessible to the public, student athletes and youth sports organizations while using Knowlton Stadium / Manchester Field. While the basic elements of the project have been established, the design studies below indicate some of the various material and color decisions being considered in the design process.
The basic floor plan concept of Phase II carries over from the Master Plan: three stories of classrooms at two per floor = six new classrooms. The original conceptual location for the new athletic team rooms and public toilets has shifted -- from existing storage space at the south end of the E-Wing -- to the north end, under the new addition. This location for both classrooms and athletics program/public toilets is a much-preferred shift that consolidates major construction activity to just one area and preserves existing McCall storage space. Floor plans for each of the four levels are provided, below.
