I spent years in the classroom, becoming a master of multitasking, managing students while taking attendance, fixing internet connection problems and mediating disputes between two teenagers because, “Miss, he took my pencil!” I developed excellent organizational skills, keeping track of a constant influx assignments. I juggled emails and assignments submitted via Google Docs/Forms, Springboard Digital Curriculum or hard copy; instruction for different classes; tech issues that had to be resolved IMMEDIATELY as well as fires within my department. In my final years in the classroom, I became an instructor of all courses at all grade levels, tasked with pushing and pulling deficient students to complete necessary courses and walk across the graduation stage in May.
Completing the coursework for my Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences required me to apply those skills at an extreme level. During my first year in program I worked as a full time teacher while taking a full course load. Following my exit from the teaching profession, I maintained full time student status, worked as a graduate assistant ten hours per week and a separate part time job twenty hours per week while also volunteering three to five hours per week, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I continued to set myself apart with my leadership, as a go-to person, equally comfortable coordinating projects as being a team member working to complete them. I value hard work and efficiency. I set goals, create timelines and identify clear products, carefully managing time to deliver a nearly flawless product.
My hard work has earned me recognition. I was twice named a top nine teacher in Southern Arizona, for English in 2012-13 and credit recovery in 2016-17. I was also the Santa Rita Campus Teacher of the Year and one of three finalists for High School Teacher of the Year in Tucson Unified School District in 2016-17. The greatest honor was when the Class of 2017 selected me as their Commencement Speaker. I was awarded three graduate assistantships, two scholarships from the University of Arizona School of Library & Information Science and a PEO Educational Loan.
Now I am transitioning from graduate student to my new career in the information science field, I am eager to locate digital archiving positions at institutions where I can offer support to a team and make an impact.
