About the WPI Makerspace
The WPI Makerspace is a faculty organized and student run rapid prototyping lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The lab had around 15 people who helped organize and run the lab. During my time there, I was approved and set up 3D prints on Ultimaker and Taz printers, taught other students how to use 3D printers and best lab practices, and helped monitor and teach students to use the labs Full Spectrum Laser Cutter and Engraver.
Tasks

Scope: Monitor, approve, queue, fix, and keep the lab 3D printers running for students and faculty.
Challenges:
Fixing and keeping printers running 7 days a week
Diffusing situations when students prints failed and had to be reprinted

Full User Training
Full User Training
Scope: Teach basic users how to run the lab's 3D printers with best practice and get them all setup in our system.
Challenges:
Organize and run the training through the busy final season
Adapt my teaching speed for the varying skill level of users
Items Learned:
The ins and outs of 3D printers and how they run to answer questions
Trade and take shift schedules in an hourly work setting
CO2 Laser
CO2 Laser
Scope: Monitor, teach, and periodically run the Full Spectrum 48" x 36" and Full Spectrum 24" x 16" CO2 lab laser cutters.
Challenges:
Answer new questions users have and fix the Lazer when it broke
Comply with OSHA air quality concerns when users cut with inadequate materials
Items Learned:
Retina Engrave and Full Spectrum Software
Create SVGs in Inkscape and Solidworks

I wanted to thank Professor Mitra Anand and the rest of the Innovation Studio Lab Assistants for bringing me in the fold and allowing me to assist other WPI Students for an academic year and a half.
