Bio:

Matthew Pflaum is a geography PhD student at the University of Florida focusing on responses to political violence and insecurity among pastoralists in Mali and the wider Sahel and spatial insecurity as it relates to socio-cultural factors like mobilities and livelihoods. He is interested in many dimensions of insecurity including borders, urbanization, governance, extremism, mobility, and livelihoods. He holds an MSc in African studies and international development from the University of Edinburgh and an MPH in global health and infectious disease from Emory University. He enjoys soccer, traveling, hiking, running, and sailing. He spends as much time as possible in France, where his wife Charis is a marketing professor in Grenoble.
