On December 17th 2023, Matt arrived at The Grove bar in Byker to take part in speed dating for the first time. Whilst waiting for the event upstairs to begin, he stood at the downstairs bar when he noticed a gorgeous woman with blonde hair walk past, who literally took his breath away. He hoped she was also there for the speed dating event so he could have a chance to talk to her. Thankfully, when Matt went upstairs, he spotted her waiting for the event to start too. Over 2 hours and approximately 20 speed dates later, Matt finally got to sit down with the woman that he had been mesmerised by all evening.
The first date... was the quickest 5 minutes they had both ever experienced! Hopeful to leave an impression and secure another date, Matt confessed to Gemma at the end of the 5-minutes that he had spotted her downstairs before the event started and had been looking forward to talking to her all night. Gemma was thrilled with this confession and replied, “you are SO my type”!
Staying after the event to speak with each other again, they decided to go for another solo date...opting for the classic pint at Spoons. Over the course of the next 3 hours, (which ironically felt like 5 minutes) they quickly realised they shared many of the same interests such as a love of the time travel genre, and going to see stand-up comedy. More importantly they also discovered they shared many of the same values, life experiences, and way of seeing the world.
As they later discovered, after parting ways that night, Matt messaged his friend Becky (his now Groomsmaid) “Mate... I’ve met the one!”, while Gemma messaged hers “I believe I’ve met my soulmate”!
Eager to see more of each other, they planned lots of dates to see comedy, have dinner, play arcade games, go ice skating, to the fair, ice hockey, watch Lord of the Rings (at Matt’s suggestion) and lots of Marvel films together.
They spent the majority of their free time together and enjoyed each other’s company so much that they trialled living together in April 2024, which was a success. This led to Matt putting his home up for sale in June 2024 with a plan to move in with Gemma.
Following trips to Ireland, Tunisia and Berlin, Matt moved in with Gemma and adopted her cats, Shortbread and Dave, as his own.
On 17th December 2024, on the anniversary of the day they met, Matt expressed to Gemma that it had been the happiest year of his life and he couldn’t imagine another one without her. So, he asked her to marry him...
She of course said yes, as here we are inviting you to our wedding!
