Plenary Speakers Abstracts

From Sesame Street to Arithmetic Statistics

Allechar Serrano López

Montana State University

My journey started by counting the spiders on the wall, the cobwebs in the hall, and the candles on the shelf. In this talk, I will discuss how counting, in its various forms, has shaped my path in mathematics. I will also share strategies for discovering and building community in mathematics.

Up and Down

Federico Ardila

San Francisco State University

Many, many sequences, like 55, 58, 65, 71, 78, 83, 84, 84, 81, 73, 64, 57, go up and then down. Like many, many other mathematicians, I have spent many, many hours trying to understand why they do this. I will share some of the lessons - personal and mathematical - that I have learned along the way.

Plenary Speakers (virtual mode)

These talks will be streamed as part of the MATH FOR ALL virtual mode.

Poster Presenters

All of our poster presenters are University of Utah undergraduate students!

Location and parking

All conference events will take place at the Crocker Science Center (near Presidents Circle) at the University of Utah. We will mainly use rooms CSC 208, 206.

Parking around the Presidents Circle is free during the weekend.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms

You can find a map with gender neutral bathrooms in campus using the Campus Map. Please select "All Gender Restrooms" under the Map Features>Accessibility and Safety drop down.

There is a Gender Neutral bathroom on the bottom level (level zero) of  the Crocker Science Center building.

Lactation Rooms and Child Care

There is a lactation room at the Crocker Science Center (located in the basement near class labs and classrooms - next to the women's restroom).

Unfortunately, we do not have funding for child care but we can try to provide names if you are in need of a sitter.  Children are welcome!

Ethical Conduct Agreement

One of the main goals of Math For All is to create a welcoming environment for all participants. We wish for every participant to feel welcome, included, and safe at our conference.  For that reason, we ask you to be mindful of your words and actions when communicating with others. We all have a bias and make mistakes. With an open mind and a willingness to apologize, we can create a safe space for everybody.

Harassment or discrimination of any kind based on race, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression will not be permitted.

Hate speech is not permitted at the conference. We want to clarify that hate speech does not include the criticism of institutions or governments, but rather that of individuals or groups of individuals, and that we welcome uncomfortable conversations that stimulate a growth mind set.

If there is a situation during the conference that makes you feel unwelcome, we ask you to please talk to one of the organizers so we can help you as best as we can.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that this land, which is named for the Ute Tribe, is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes. Native peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial, and the resilient voices of Native Americans remain an inseparable part of our local culture. With gratitude and honor, we acknowledge the indigenous nations that have lived and continue to thrive in all conference locations. To learn more about indigenous mathematicians, please visit https://indigenousmathematicians.org

 Pre-Conference Poster Workshops

As part of the pre-conference events for the 2024 Math For All Conference, we are organizing a poster workshop for our math majors. In this workshop, we will go over the basics of poster preparation and answer your questions about how to prepare a conference poster. Everyone is welcome to join this workshop regardless of their interest in presenting at the conference. We are happy to announce that we will print posters for at least 10 undergraduate students presenters free of charge and we would really love to have you as a presenter at the conference!

The Poster Workshop will be held on February 26th, 2024.

Time: 3:30pm - 5:30pm

Location: LCB 115 (computer lab)
