PLENARY TALK ABSTRACTS

What is the Mathematics in Mathematics Education?

Eva Thanheiser

Portland State University

In this paper I tackle the question What is the mathematics in mathematics education? By providing three different frames for the word mathematics.

After introducing the frames I discuss their implication with respect to student-centered classroom, context, and culture.

Up and Down

Federico Ardila

San Fransisco State University

Many, many sequences, like 55, 58, 65, 71, 78, 83, 84, 84, 81, 73, 64, 57, go up and then down. Like many, many other mathematicians, I have spent many, many hours trying to understand why they do this. I will share some of the lessons - personal and mathematical - that I have learned along the way.
