Class Discussion: Why do we learn about exponents and scientific notation?
to better understand measurement
understanding very long distances
understanding extremely small or very large objects like our solar system and microorganisms
reading scientific text
Unit 03: Exponents and Scientific Notation
Key Vocabulary
This includes vocabulary that is new to this unit as well as vocabulary that was introduced in prior units.
Exponent (Power) - the number that tells you how many times to multiply the base.
Base - the number that gets multiplied when using an exponent.
Exponential Form - a number represented by using an exponent.
Squaring - multiplying a whole number by itself creates a perfect square.
Cube Numbers - multiplying the same whole number three time creates a cube.
Perfect Squares - a number made by squaring a whole number.
Square Root - a number that, multiplied by itself, creates a perfect square.
Radical - the symbol for used to ask you to take the square root, cubed root, or so on.
Scientific Notation - a short way of writing a long number. The number is written in two parts. The first part contains a number in the ones place, followed by a decimal point, and possibly more numbers on the right of the decimal point. The second part contains the base of 10 with an exponent.
Expression - numbers, variables, and operators grouped together to show the value of something. Expressions can be numerical or algebraic.
Variable - letters that are used to represent an unknown or changing quantity.
Constant - a fixed value.
Term - numbers and variables separated by the addition symbol, subtraction symbol, or equal sign.
Students will use problem solving, mathematical communication, mathematical reasoning, connections, and representations to:
6.4 recognize and represent patterns with whole number exponents and perfect squares.
7.1 a) investigate and describe the concept of negative exponents for powers of ten; b) compare and order numbers greater than zero written in scientific notation;* d) determine square roots of perfect squares;*
* On the state assessment, items measuring this objective are assessed without the use of a calculator.
