Graphing Calculator (Essential): You will need to have a graphing calculator for this class. I will demonstrate how to use the TI-84 and TI-89 in class.
Calculators are available for checkout for FREE from both SRJC libraries on a short-term or semester-length basis. You can check out calculators here:
Mahoney Library (Petaluma Campus) / 1st Floor / Circulation Desk
Doyle Library (Santa Rosa Campus) / 2nd Floor / Tech Gear Desk
Textbook (Strongly Recommended): Calculus, Early Transcendentals, by James Stuart, 9th edition
This is the same textbook you will use in SRJC's Math 1B (Calculus 2) and Math 1C (Calculus 3) courses.
If you have a different edition of the textbook, you are welcome to use it for Math 1A this semester.
WebAssign (Essential): Homework will be done ONLINE using Cengage’s WebAssign course software.
To register for our WebAssign Math 1A course, please follow these steps:
Log in to our SRJC Math 1A Canvas Course.
Click on Modules in the left-hand menu.
Click on the link provided under the Register for WebAssign Module to create your account.
Purchase Options: You can purchase the ebook with WebAssign access (either for one term or multi-term) directly from the WebAssign Website. Alternatively, you can purchase either the textbook and WebAssign access from the SRJC Petaluma Bookstore for approximately $150. WebAssign also offers a FREE 2-week trial, so you can use that option to get started in the class.
I am here to answer your questions and support your success in this course. The best way to get your questions answered is to ask them during class! I know that can be intimidating at times, but I guarantee that if you have a question, you are not alone - you're just the first one brave enough to speak up!
If you have a personal issue that you wish to discuss with me, I prefer that we chat in person before or after class but you can also email me if you are more comfortable with that mode of communication.
For lengthier issues or for questions that occur outside of class meetings, you can email me at abrown@santarosa.edu, drop by any of my office hours, or post your question in our Math 1A General Course Q&A Discussion Forum in Canvas.
I strive to respond to emails within 1-2 school days. If you do not hear back from me within that time, please feel free to email me again! Sometimes messages get buried in my in-box, and a repeat message will bump it to the top again.
I am available to help you with homework questions during my office hours.
Post your questions in our Math 1A Canvas Discussion Forum. Your question will be seen by your peers and if anyone has the answer, by all means, answer it! You can also upload images and screen shots to help each other. I will also monitor the questions in the discussion forum and will answer them during my office hours, as time permits.
Take advantage of SRJC's FREE Tutoring Services, which are located in the Petaluma Campus Mahoney Library Reading Room and in the first floor of the Santa Rosa Campus Doyle Library.
There is also a Math Lab available in Lindley Hall, Room 231 on the Santa Rosa campus.
Your WebAssign subscription also has many built-in resources, including videos and explanations on similar questions.
