Support for Students

"The best advice I can give you is to push aside all of your preconceived notions and past good or bad experiences with math, and just give this class a chance. You’re not going to regret it."

- Elyssa, Spring 2018

What's my role?

As your course instructor, I am your first contact for the help you need in this course. If something doesn't make sense, sounds confusing, or you'd just like more information, let me know. Use that Canvas Inbox or email we talked about. If you're having difficulty using Canvas, let me know. But if Canvas stops working for some reason or you're experiencing technical issues, please see Canvas Technical Support below.

My Advice for Success

Set effort goals

Set effort-based goals for yourself this semester (you'll learn a lot about effort-based goals in our first few Modules). My favorite way to set effort-based goals is to use time-commitment goals. For example, instead of saying "I need to get Module 1 done tonight," an effort goal would be to say "I'm going to work on Module 1 for an hour tonight".  The first is focused on finishing something before you've even started it.  And sometimes we set ourselves up for failure when we set goals focused on outcomes. Instead, if you set a goal of working on something for one hour, you can achieve that goal no matter how much of the module you get done! And achieving goals feels good, doesn't it?! For more on Effort Goals, consider watching a 2-minute video

Spread out the work

That being said, working on our course a little each day throughout the week is going to be the most beneficial for your learning and ability to keep pace with the assignments.  I do not recommend cramming in the week's work in one or two days.  Spreading out the work over several days not only allows you time to digest what we are learning but also allows you to reach out for support when you get stuck.

Avoid Frustration

People learn better when they are not frustrated, so please reach out to me, your classmates, or the free Cuyamaca College tutoring services BEFORE you get frustrated. I'm here to support you, and I want to work with you whenever possible! My contact information is provided on the homepage as well as in the orientation module for our course.
