The meaning of rehabilitation is when you help to restore someone's mental or physical health back to how it was through therapy and training
This process usually takes place after a person is injured, goes through a traumatic event, or if they are just coming out of jail
"The correctional system’s continuous failure to correct inmates, especially when they have experienced the adverse prison environments, increases the possibilities that released inmates will return to prison for violating parole terms or for engaging in new crimes." (International Journal of Criminal Justice Sciences)
There are not enough efforts being done to help prevent people from reentering jail after their release
In the video on the home page, Hank Green discussed how there are so many banks and jobs that will decline a person simply because they have a record
This makes it nearly impossible for a person to be able to comfortably and stably enter society after their release and ultimately the reason why a lot of people end up right back in jail
Mental health is a huge topic in our society and it has always been. It sometimes gets ignored and looked at as a joke, especially in POC communities. I believe that people who are incarcerated should be required to receive some type of mental health treatment.
While looking at the Bureau of Justice statistics for mental health in incarcerated people, 56 percent of state prisoners, 45 percent of federal prisoners, and 64 percent of jail inmates have some type of mental health issues. Most will not receive any type of treatment while they are imprisoned. Only about 1 in every 3 state prisoners who struggle with their mental health has been reported to actually receive treatment.
