This breaks down US imprisonment and goes into detail about the reasons.
In the last 400 years, the US's incarceration rate has increased about 500 percent. Each year, about 11 million people go through jails in the United States.
In 2015 a study was done which showed that about 79 percent of incarcerated people in New York City jails have yet to be convicted for any type of crime. They are simply waiting for their trial, sentencing, or to be released. This is another major issue in this country because of how long the system takes. People could be waiting a year or more just to receive their trial which shows how little of importance they are to the justice system. There is absolutely no reason as to why people should have to sit in jail for an absurd amount of time for a crime they might not be guilty of.
