In a PBS article, it was said that about 10,000 kids are put into adult jails and prisons on any given day. Looking at Rikers Island, there are approximately 188 16 and 17-year old children that are locked up. The number dropped from 2013 when there were 337. There should not be any children at a place like Rikers Island.
New York and North Carolina are the two states that have decided that once a child turns 16 they are an adult and can be tried as one. They did pledge to end solitary confinement for people under the age of 22.
