ENGLISH MARU-JAN GUIDE

Maru-Jan is an online Reach Mahjong client developed by Signal Talk that's been in service since 2004. Maru-Jan's focus for their client centers around an authentic experience, as close to playing offline as possible. To achieve this, they go so far as to record authentic sounds and even to attempt to replicate the pseudo-random shuffling of an auto-dealer table. For me, Maru-Jan feels less like an online mahjong game and more like I would imagine playing at a jansou (mahjong parlor) would be like. There is always an event going on in Maru-Jan, which can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know what's happening. I am putting together this rudimentary guide of how the client works so that maybe others will give Maru-Jan a try!

I want to clarify that i am actually not really a speaker or much of a reader of Japanese. I am making this guide as part research project, part puzzle, and part writing exercise. My translations are not guaranteed to be accurate. if you find something to be inaccurate or unclear, please let me know on twitter at @experimilk or experimilk a t geemail. This is a labor of love, and all images edited or otherwise are taken off Signal Talk's website or of their client. Used without permission, fair use, please don't sue, etc. etc.
