The main character in the work is gender neutral. You could be thinking right now “is this a he or a she?” They are doing something all of us do: shopping at a grocery store. They are visibly aging, but wearing a glamorous, feminine outfit. People are often advised to wear gender and age appropriate outfits, but my subject does not care, and shows an example of bravery and rejection of society standards.

I mixed different elements from different timelines to evoke an uncomfortable uncanny feeling. This artwork depicts actor Willem Dafoe shopping at a grocery store, wearing a 1920s flapper girl outfit. Willem Dafoe is a well-known actor, however, he is mostly recognised by his expressive and unique face, rather than his name. He identifies as a man, but in my work, he is wearing a feminine outfit. This seeks to spark a conversation about the performative nature of femininity and queer identity, as gender perception is often related to outward appearance. The grocery store is glowing green from radium, paying homage to the radium girls, women who got catastrophic health complications from working with radium, an example of what capitalism and treating workers as disposable does.
