Hair is something that is bought and sold, and long straight white hair is seen as the ultimate standard for femininity. It’s the reason you see women spending money to damage their hair with bleach, permanent straightening, and hair products. The background is in complete darkness, but the hair is glowing. This work can be seen as a POV of seeing fake blonde hair as a solution to your personal problem. Something like a wig can be seen as more theatrical, but women choose wigs and hair extensions for their every day look. I wanted to explore, is something like long blonde hair a personal beauty preference, or a carefully manufactured standard to maximise profit. A woman who bleaches hair, buys hair strengthening products, buys wigs, or gets extensions every month is the perfect client. She alters her natural state to the maximum and spends the most money. Natural extensions and wigs are sourced from women in 3rd world countries, then sold back to women who want to look beautiful. It’s an endless cycle of exploitation, which is hard to break.
