Welcome to my Conducting I page!
This course represents the foundation of my development as a conductor as thanks to Dr. Meixner we focused on baton technique, gesture clarity, score study, rehearsal methods, and musical leadership. Throughout the semester, I have worked to refine my physical communication on the podium while deepening my understanding of how conductors shape ensemble sound, support musicians, and bring music to life. This page highlights my reflections, progress, and key learning outcomes from the course as well as conductor reflections between different conductors and styles they utilize.
This video features my conducting performance of The Tempest by Robert W. Smith, a piece known for its dramatic intensity, textures, and dynamic contrasts. The overall easy nature of the work made conducting preparation imperative. In preparing this work, I focused on developing clear gestural language, consistent tempo control, and expressive shaping that reflects the storm-like character of the score. This performance demonstrates my growth in communicating musical intention to an ensemble—balancing precision, energy, and expressive nuance. It serves as both a milestone in my Conducting I development and a foundation for future work on the podium to help guide other students.
This performance of Be Thou My Vision represents my developing philosophy as a choral conductor: leading with clarity, empathy, and intentional musical storytelling. In preparing and conducting this piece, I aimed to shape a sound that reflects the hymn’s deep sense of devotion and quiet strength. My approach emphasizes long, connected phrasing, unified vowel shapes, and a warm, blended tone that allows the text to resonate with sincerity.
As a conductor, I believe that sacred choral music offers a unique opportunity to help singers tap into both musical and emotional expression. In this performance, I worked to guide the ensemble toward a shared interpretation—one rooted in trust, attentive listening, and a collective commitment to shaping each musical line with purpose. My gestures are designed to be fluid and inviting, encouraging singers to breathe together, move together, and build a cohesive musical narrative.
Be Thou My Vision is a piece that asks for sensitivity, stillness, and intention, and this conducting project reflects my dedication to helping singers bring those qualities forward. Through this experience, I continue to develop my identity as a leader who values musical excellence, expressive nuance, and the transformative power of ensemble music-making.
