NEW CREATION SHOW CHOIR 2024-2025
New Creation is an auditioned show choir that is open to 9th -12th grade students. All singers are also members of the award-winning Marion High School Concert Chorale or Meistersingers. Show Choir is an extra-curricular activity at Marion, thus they do not meet during the regular school day. New Creation rehearses on Monday evenings for three hours and a few select evenings and weekends throughout the year. This year, New Creation will attend 4 competitions; they will be competing at Benton, West Branch, Anamosa, and Cedar Rapids Washington. In addition, members of the group perform the national anthem at Marion sporting events and also participate in caroling during the holiday season. New Creation hosts the Marion Masquerade Invitational. The group is choreographed by Ben Eklund and directed by Jonathan Dyrland and Meegan Dyrland.

Vocal Audition:
All singers will need to complete a short vocal audition. These auditions will be recorded. Each singer will use their mobile phone to make the recording. Singers can search their phone for an app that works as an audio recorder (e.g. "Voice Memo," "Recorder," "Audio Recorder"). They will open the app and record the following information:
"Hello. My name is______________ and I will be in _____ grade next year and I sing (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass)."
Then they will sing, "America" (My Country 'Tis of Thee) in their respective key. After finishing "America," they may choose to sing an additional song of their choosing or simply stop their recording. If a student decides to sing an additional song, it should be a song that shows off their voice. In theory, they should pick a song that they wish their show choir would perform so they could be featured as the soloist.
When you are finished making the recording, please save the recording to your Google Drive or the "documents folder" on your phone and then submit the recording using the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/56EQuR18mG4NGgAG8

Choreography Audition:
All singers will also complete a short choreography audition. Any student unable to attend the choreography audition on Monday, April 28th at 6:30-8:30 pm in the Marion High School Red Gym, should email Mr. Dyrland at jdyrland@marion-isd.org. Students should wear comfortable clothing & shoes for dancing. Upon arrival, each student will sign up for a rehearsal number and then wear that number for the audition so that our judges do not know the names of the students auditioning. Students will audition in numerical order in groups of 5 with a Dance Captain dancing out front leading the audition. Each auditioning group will likely be asked to perform the audition 2 or 3 times to ensure each student is given a score. Once the student is finished with their audition, they are free to leave (e.g. the lower the number on the sign-up, the sooner you are finished with the audition).

Code of Conduct:
All singers will also be expected to complete and return a Code of Conduct Form. Parents and students should carefully read this form. Once this form is received by the director, all of its rules and expectations will be enforced. Click here for a copy of the Code of Conduct Form.
Choir Handbook and Contract:
All singers and their parents are expected to read through the Choir Handbook prior to their audition to familiarize themselves with the rules and expectations of show choir participation at Marion High School. Upon signing the MHS Show Choir Contract (parent & student), the rules and expectations prescribed in the handbook and contract will be enforced for the duration of the student's career at Marion High School. You can read the Choir Handbook on the homepage of this website. Click here for a copy of the MHS Show Choir Contract.
