Hi! My name is Maria Urriola. I am 21 years old and I am currently studying a Bachelor's Degree in English with emphasis in Translation at Universidad Latina de Panamá. I am also starting a degree in Software Development at the Technological University of Panama. My dream is to merge both careers and create amazing projects for many fields such as translation, medicine and environment.
Simultaneous Projects
This was the first project of the course and consisted of repeating simultaneously what was said in the videos to practice my simultaneous skills. For this projects I parrotted from English to English and from Spanish to Spanish. For the project I used the automatic transcription tool offered by YouTube to properly practice the content of the videos and facilitate the simultaneous translation of the videos. To record the projects I use ScreenPal which allows me to record my screen, my camera and my audio at the same time, this makes the process of editing the videos much easier as I can edit the videos right there if necessary.
For this sencond project I had to do a a slow simultaneous translation of two stories for kids, one was English to Spanish and the other Spanish to English. This was my favorite activity since I had to play with the tones of the story telling. This was a very fun project in which I had to paraphrase a Japanese story from English to English. This experience was new and very interesting as I had to play with the tones of the narration and the meaning of the story in order to practice it properly. This was a challenging project and one of the most complicated for me, as I had to quickly translate two scientific videos from Spanish to English and vice versa. This experience was a bit frustrating and I even had to slow down the videos a bit to practice as they were too fast for my pace. For this project I used the automatic transcription tool offered by YouTube to practice the content of the videos and for the recording I used ScreenPal which allowed me to record my screen, my camera and my audio at the same time, this makes editing the video much easier as I had to edit my recording several times due to the complexity of the project.
This was the most challenging and frustrating project for me, as I had to translate a video about criminal law from Spanish to English. This experience was new and taught me a lot since I had to use terms that I had never used before. For this course I had high expectations especially because one of my weaknesses is my ability to retain a lot of information in the long term. Therefore, I tried even harder than usual and practiced a lot to complete all the simultaneous projects that I found really interesting. I can say that my favorite was Project #2 - Slow Translation, in which I had to translate two children's stories, one from English to Spanish and the other from Spanish to English. It was a fun experience, as I not only had to use my retention skills, but also vary my tones as the story progressed. I really enjoyed this course, especially because I also had to face difficult topics, such as the Optional Project on criminal law. It was really tricky as I had to familiarize myself with many new terms that I had never dealt with before. In order to understand the topic I had to repeatedly pronounce these terms and thus managed to complete the project correctly.
In my experience, both Moodle and Google Sites have their advantages and disadvantages for the delivery of the activities in this course. Moodle is ideal for the forums because in them we can post the videos that we will use in each project so that they are not repeated, also in the modules we find a lot of useful information both for the projects. In addition, this is where we do the questionnaires and quizzes that are assigned since it offers automatic grading, which makes it quite practical. On the other hand, Google Sites is useful for the creation of the portfolio where the projects are presented since it offers a great variety of tools to elaborate a creative and interactive portfolio.
Throughout the course I have learned many new tools and the use of Google Sites has been quite interesting for me because we can capture YouTube videos directly since that is where I upload my projects. For the realization of the projects I use the automatic transcription tool that YouTube offers to practice properly the content of the videos and to facilitate the simultaneous translation of them. To record the projects I use ScreenPal which allows me to record my screen, my camera and my audio at the same time, this facilitates me a lot the process of editing the videos since I can edit the videos right there if necessary. Thanks to the multiple tools that I have used in this course I have learned valuable lessons about editing and creating projects.
I found this course quite enriching for my knowledge of the English language and translation, and the class development allowed me to practice my simoultaneos translation skills. As a tool to improve my own learning in the future I will implement requesting more feedback from my instructors on a regular basis, as the feedback helps me to identify areas of improvement and adapt my skills and knowledge. I will also use all available resources such as textbooks, online materials, supplementary readings and educational tools to explore different perspectives and deepen my understanding of simultaneous translation. Finally, I really enjoyed the challenging nature of the projects and will try to set myself more challenges that allow me to grow and learn and deepen my knowledge.
