NEW SUBSTANCES

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND THE RENEWAL OF ARCHITECTURE

needs, situations and problems

«(...) instead of the representation of absolutely objective logic (separation of structure and content, coherence between interior function and exterior form, division into zones appropriate for different uses), a narration is substituted. A building is no longer good merely if it works and is efficient, but must both give and say more; even symbols and stories when useful.»

«(...) architecture is made in concert with the space it shapes; interior life spills over naturally into exterior life.»

 - Antonino Saggio

Vill'Alcina by Sergio Fernandez

In the article presented, I quote two excerpts that particularly caught my attention.

The first talks about how architecture has ceased to be objective and centered only on functionality, blending the various functions to tell a story, provoking different sensations in the user when inhabiting the spaces. The second shows the importance of combining nature with architecture and how this has happened naturally through the increasing transparency present in architecture.

I bring you an example that speaks strongly to me in relation to these themes. Vill'Alcina in Caminha, Portugal, designed by architect Sergio Fernandez.

The architect creates an almost poetic path between the rooms. The kitchen is elevated, but in the same space as the living room so that the person using this space isn't enclosed, and the bedrooms aren't enclosed either, so that once again, in this house, which is a vacation home and has the purpose of bringing the family together, there is greater contact between the users. But the greatest feature of this house is how it integrates with nature. Over time, it became clear how it could be built without being an imposition or a statement. In this house, which follows the slope of the land, the landscapes become pictures through the windows, almost as if they were entering the house. In an age in which we are constantly surrounded by technology and chaotic cities, little glimpses of nature are what we value most.
